On behalf of Deutsche Bahn and the city of Kornwestheim, the pedestrian subway at Kornwestheim railway station was fundamentally redesigned. An anonymous, purely functional passageway was transformed into a clearly structured, inviting transit space.
As the central connecting axis between the platforms and the urban space, the subway plays an important role in the daily flow of movement. The redesign picks up on this function and translates it into a spatial system of colour and form: Graphic elements on walls, pillars and stairs create orientation, guide movement and make paths intuitively legible. Inspired by Memphis design and postmodern graphic traditions, the project translates these influences into a contemporary, urban context - and gives the existing concrete architecture a striking new identity.
