FADED - Villa Merkel

FADED transforms the subway to Villa Merkel into an intermediate space that defies unambiguous interpretation. The soft pastel gradients lie like atmospheric layers over the sober concrete architecture and undermine its functional rigour without denying it. What at first appears to be a mere decorative intervention turns out, on closer inspection, to be a precise examination of the conditions of the site itself: a transit space that is no one's destination, but always just a threshold.

In the context of the exhibition The measurement of space the work shifts the concept of measurement from the geometric to the atmospheric. The colour transitions do not follow any architectural logic; instead, they superimpose a second, equal spatial structure over the existing one - one that can no longer be described in metres, but in temperatures, transitions and moods. The wall ceases to be a boundary and becomes a membrane.

The decisive factor here is the temporal core of the work. Once a year, newly created tags are reworked with further colour transitions - not removed, but absorbed. FADED is therefore not a completed work, but a practice. Each repainting is simultaneously a reaction, appropriation and further writing; the intervention of others is not understood as a disturbance, but as a prerequisite for the next state. Over the years, a palimpsest-like structure emerges in which authorship, time and public space enter into a productive relationship. The work thus rejects the classic concept of a work of art and is closer to an ecological understanding of the image: something that grows, ages, reacts and is never finished.

In this light, the title FADED becomes ambiguous. It describes not only the visual fading of colour, but also an understanding of presence that has moved away from the permanent. At a time when public space is increasingly controlled, designed and optimised, FADED opens up a counter-figure: the conscious acceptance of change, superimposition and slow disappearance.
