Pass A38

In this free work, Philipp Becker and Georg Waibel from Studio Vierkant explore graffiti as a practice in public space. The starting point is the scene around the „pass A38“ from Asterix Conquers Rome, which symbolises bureaucratic hurdles and absurd procedures. Transferred to graffiti, a mural is created that visualises questions of access, permission and control. At the same time, parallels can be drawn between the exaggerated, sometimes crazy-looking characters in the film and the often equally idiosyncratic protagonists of graffiti culture - between rule-breaking, persistence and a logic of their own within a closed system. Between image and writing, graffiti itself becomes an object of contemplation. The work sees itself as a reduced, visual reflection on the conditions under which design takes place in public space.
