The large-format work by Michel Balke and Jan Ducks moves between painting and gestural intervention. Black, vertical traces characterise the surface - raw, running and drawn by gravity. 

This is contrasted by bright overpaintings in shades of white and grey, which break up the strictness of the composition. The result is a field of tension between control and chance, between setting and reaction. The reduced colour palette directs the focus to materiality and process: colour appears not only as a means, but as a visible action.
